Has prostate surgery left you leaking? Dr. Nuss can help.

Stress Incontinence

Don’t let stress incontinence get you stressed out!  Surgery to remove the prostate for prostate cancer or less commonly for benign prostate disease can lead to leakage, commonly known as stress incontinence.  In many cases, the leakage improves over time, but if it has been six months to a year after surgery and you are still leaking, its time to seek help with a specialist who can help you get back to normal.  Dr. Nuss offers all treatment options for male incontinence.

Urge Incontinence/Overactive Bladder

The sudden and unexpected need to urinate caused by an unexpected contraction of the bladder.

Treatment Options for Male Incontinence

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation

This non-surgical approach can help some cases of mild stress incontinence.  A specialized rehabilitation protocol can help strengthen pelvic floor muscles and improve the leakage. This is most effective immediately after surgery.

Male Sling

If you are a mild to moderate leaker, a sling may be the right option for you.  Through an incision below the scrotum, a hammock- like mesh sling is placed under the urethra to help restore support that was lost with prostate surgery.  The mesh is made from a hypoallergenic material and uses your body’s own tissue and pelvic bones to help hold it in place. This is a new and innovative way to treat incontinence.

Artificial Urinary Sphincter

The artificial urinary sphincter, or AUS, has been a treatment option for over 30 years.  This device is implanted through an incision below the scrotum and uses a cuff that can be opened and closed by a button that is placed in the scrotum next to the testicles.  Once the button is pushed, the cuff opens, acting like a flood gate, allowing urine to pass and empty through the urethra. The cuff slowly closes on its own. This is a great option for men who have severe leakage or have had radiation in addition to prostate surgery for cancer treatment.

If you are sick and tired of leaking, you can make an appointment with Dr. Nuss to discuss which option would be the best for you!
